Silksworth Labour Councillors have announced that following lengthy discussions between the council, a proposed developer and two leading supermarket brands, plans have finally been put forward for a new £15m retail development, creating over 100 jobs.

A formal proposal has been submitted for the construction of an M&S Foodstore, Aldi supermarket and a Starbucks drive-through on a section of land on Silksworth Lane opposite the Sainsbury’s site.

The proposal will now go to formal consultation via the Planning Process and it’s your opportunity to have your say.

A joint statement from Cllrs Tye, Laverick, and Clinton, said: “As you know all three of us councillors live in the ward so we are acutely aware of the need to push developments in the City to promote a positive economy but we also recognise the need to listen to what our residents say as ultimately it is ourselves that will live with this proposal on our doorsteps.

“We must weigh up job creation, consumer choice, accessibility for residents but also the impact on the road infrastructure on Silksworth Lane and surrounding estates, and loss of open space.

“Without doubt improvements will be needed to Silksworth Lane, this is our opportunity to get our views made on pedestrian crossing points and any signalised junctions.

“Overall, we are pleased that this proposal has finally come forward so that the residents can have their views heard.”
