Sunderland’s Labour leader has paid tribute to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, following his death today, aged 99.

Councillor Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council and the of the group, said the Duke was a remarkable man and an inspiration to many.

Councillor Miller said: “I join with leaders from across the UK, and all political colours, to send my deepest condolences to her Majesty The Queen, and The Royal Family.

“Prince Philip has been a proud and dedicated servant to the United Kingdom, and an unwavering support to our Queen.

“We owe him, and indeed the Queen, a huge debt of gratitude for all they have given to our nation.”

As a mark of sympathy, the Labour Party has suspended campaigning while the nation grieves the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh.
