The leader of Sunderland Labour Group has welcomed the appointment of Sir Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party.
He said: “Keir has a tremendous track record. He is a principled politician who can unite the party and ensure that we provide strong opposition as we move towards the 2024 election.
“Now is not a time for political point-scoring, but about asking pertinent questions of the Government, in the national interest, to ensure that we respond to the Covid-19 crisis in a way that protects as many people as possible.
“I look forward to seeing Keir and his new Shadow Cabinet make the case for the Labour Party and helping with the national effort of beating Covid-19, which should be everyone’s sole focus right now.”
