For years, the Burn Inn traffic lights have caused misery for motorists, and, more importantly, posed a real danger for people crossing the busy A182 and Gillas Lane.

Copt Hill Ward Labour representative, Cllr Kevin Johnston, said: “This major Coalfields route that links Hetton and Houghton can be almost unpassable at times during rush hour, but thanks to recently confirmed infrastructure investment of £350,000 it is set for a significant upgrade.

“This work will alleviate congestion, make the crossings safer and enhance the road surface. It is fantastic to see years of campaigning for this work finally coming to fruition on a project that will improve the lives of residents and motorists.

“Local Labour councillors are all working incredibly hard across the Coalfield communities to make life better for the people of Sunderland.

“There are a number of good news stories in the pipeline for Copt Hill Ward that I’m looking forward to sharing in the coming weeks.”
