SUNDERLAND COUNCIL is driving down costs for motorists with the lowest parking charges in the UK.

A new survey carried out by private number plate provider National Numbers found that Sunderland is the cheapest place for motorists to park their cars in the UK. The city also enjoys the third cheapest parking globally, with drivers in Sunderland paying an average of just 79p an hour to park their cars.

Councillor Amy Wilson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport at Sunderland City Council, said: “We aim to provide parking facilities that are safe, secure and affordable, and it is fantastic to see that we are not only leading the way in the North East, but nationally.

“Compared to our North-East neighbour, Newcastle, our parking is over £1 cheaper on average – and it’s over £2 cheaper than cities like Manchester and Leeds. It’s great news for residents and visitors who want to make use of the city centre, but it’s even better for businesses, who rely on convenient, affordable parking.”

National Numbers compared data between HPI checker and Parkopedia to analyse some of the least and most expensive places to park in the UK and the rest of the world.

Cllr Wilson added: “The Labour-led council has a commitment to supporting businesses in this city, as well as residents. We have an abundance of affordable parking throughout the city and this survey proves that our efforts to make Sunderland an accessible city, are paying off.

“By keeping the costs of parking low, it means that more residents and visitors can use our parking facilities, without being put off by hefty price tags.”
